In recent years, the momentum behind women's hockey has surged, yet beneath this excitement lies a crucial need for greater diversity and inclusion in the sport. Let's lace up our skates and embark on a journey to become fierce allies for women and minorities in hockey, championing equality, celebrating talent, and carving a path towards a more inclusive future on and off the ice.

Shifting Demographics & Changing the Culture

Despite evolving demographics, hockey culture remains entrenched in an "old boys club" mentality. As someone who has witnessed the game's evolution over 25 years, I've seen the urgent need for inclusivity grow with each passing season. It's vital for allies to welcome women into leadership roles and support their growth. As our communities diversify, it's crucial that we adapt to grow enrollment and interest in the sport.

From Question to Action:

When my daughters first took to the ice in Bradford, I knew I wanted to be part of the change. Thanks to the visionary leadership of the association's former President, Paul Dossey (RIP Paul, miss you around the rink), we began paving the way for girls' hockey in Bradford. Despite challenges and pushback from other associations, we pressed forward, prioritizing the growth of women in the game for our community.

Empowering Women in Hockey:

Building a girls' hockey program goes beyond teaching skills on the ice; it's about empowering women to become leaders both in the sport and in life. Many talented women have hesitated to step into coaching roles, but the tide is slowly turning. It's encouraging to see more women taking on coaching positions and breaking barriers in the sport.

Leveling the Playing Field:

It's time to challenge the stereotypes ingrained in hockey culture. As allies, we must recognize that expertise comes in various forms and support women who have faced challenges related to stereotypes. Let's create an inclusive and equitable environment for everyone involved in the sport.

Action Items for Allies:

To be true allies, we must take concrete steps to promote gender equality in hockey:

  1. Educate Yourself: Take the initiative to learn about the challenges and barriers that women face in hockey. This includes understanding issues such as unequal access to resources, gender biases, and lack of representation. By educating yourself, you can become a more informed advocate for change within the sport.

  2. Listen and Amplify: Actively listen to the experiences and voices of women in hockey and amplify their stories. Let me say that one again - Actively listen to the experiences and voices of women in hockey and amplify their stories. Provide platforms for women to share their perspectives and ideas, whether it's through social media, community events, or team meetings. By elevating women's voices, you contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable environment within the sport.

  3. Challenge Stereotypes: Challenge and debunk harmful stereotypes and assumptions about women's abilities in hockey. Encourage others to recognize and appreciate the skills, dedication, and athleticism of female players. By challenging stereotypes, you help create a culture of respect and recognition for women's contributions to the sport.

In the game of hockey, diversity isn't just a goal – it's a necessity. By championing women and minorities in the sport, we enrich our teams and communities and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future. Together, let's drive change on and off the ice and make hockey a game for everyone.
