Over the years, I’ve developed a passion for reading athlete autobiographies (you also can't go wrong with anything written by Stephen Brunt). Their experiences and wisdom offer invaluable lessons, guiding actions and decisions toward success for athletes of all ages and skill levels.

 

This time of year is particularly special, as the next generation graduates from universities and colleges, with many well-known influencers delivering inspirational commencement speeches.


This past week, we were privileged to hear two fantastic speeches from sports legends Roger Federer and Tom Brady. Their stories of success, resilience, and commitment are not only inspiring but also provide practical lessons for both athletes and professionals alike. The off-season is a crucial period for young hockey players to develop the skills, resilience, and mindset necessary for the upcoming season. Federer and Brady, two of the greatest athletes in their respective sports, offer insights to inspire you to make the most of your summer training. Here’s how their wisdom can help you stay motivated and focused during the off-season.

Perfection is Impossible: Lessons from Roger Federer

Roger Federer, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, teaches us an important lesson about perfection. In his illustrious career, Federer played 1,526 singles matches, winning almost 80% of them. However, he elaborates on the fact that he only won about 54% of the points in each match. Even at the highest level of tennis, athletes win just over half of their points. This statistic highlights a crucial mindset: you can't dwell on every mistake; you need to focus on the next opportunity.

 

"When you lose every second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot," says Federer. "You teach yourself to think, 'OK, I double-faulted; it's only a point. OK, I came to the net and the ball got passed me again; it's only a point.' Even a great shot, like an overhead backhand smash that ends up on ESPN's Top 10, is just a point."

 

Federer's message is clear: focus on the present moment. You can't control the past or the future. When playing, make each point the most important thing in the world. But once it's over, let it go. This mindset allows you to fully commit to the next point with intensity, clarity, and focus.

"I encourage everyone to play football for the simple reason that it is hard," says Brady. "It's hard to wake up in the off-season at 6:00 AM to train while your friends are sleeping in and eating pancakes. It's hard to head to practice weighed down with gear when it's 90°F out and everyone else is at the pool or the beach."

 

Brady's advice is to embrace these challenges because they prepare you for the adversity you will face in both sports and life. "Life is hard no matter who you are; there are bumps and hits along the way. Prepare yourself because football lessons teach us that success and achievement come from overcoming adversity and that team accomplishment far exceeds anyone's individual goals."

 

Being legendary and a hall of fame athlete is rare. However, to be successful, you don't have to be special; you just have to be what most people aren't—consistent, determined, and willing to work without shortcuts. Brady refers to successful teammates who exemplify this work ethic, integrity, purpose, determination, and discipline. All of these traits you can control.

Remember, the journey is tough, but the rewards—both in hockey and life—are worth it. Follow the examples set by champions like Roger Federer and Tom Brady.
